Beeper-size Monitor Measures Physical Activity
The BioTrainer-Pro is a handy, clip-to-the-belt
device for measuring physical activity. This
beeper-size unit has a storage capacity of 112 days
and is especially useful for recording lifestyle
exercise in applications involving obesity,
weight-loss, health and fitness.
The monitor features a biaxial acceleration sensor
for measuring a full range of body movements from
sedentary to intense activity. Data is digitally
sampled, accumulated in 15 sec, 30 sec.,1 min., 2
min., or 5 min. epochs and saved as either absolute
"g" units or converted to calories burned. A large
LCD readout provides for immediate visual feedback
or the display can be disabled.
With the unit's download cable, data can be
transferred to a Windows-based PC. A comprehensive
display and analysis software package provides for
printable graphic plots, file management and data
export to spreadsheets.
The BioTrainer-Pro was developed through research
supported by The National Institutes of Health.
Clinical Studies:
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University
conducted a weight loss study ( presented at the
American Psychiatric Association 1998 ) to assess
the benefits of visual feedback coupled with
lifestyle exercising. Subjects who wore the
BioTrainer-Pro with activity displayed were
motivated to walk 40 minutes a day on average,
compared to 29 minutes for the group without
feedback. Over 8 months, those in the BioTrainer Pro
group lost an average of 24 pounds; the others, 14.
In another Johns Hopkins' study (JAMA, 1999; vol.
281; #4), 40 overweight women were split into two
groups. One group increased lifestyle activities
using the BioTrainer-Pro; the other attended three
aerobic classes per week. After 16 weeks, the study
showed that increased casual activity works just as
well as exercise classes. Both groups lost about
17.5 pounds. After a year, the BioTrainer-Pro group
regained only 0.5 pounds vs. 3.5 for aerobics. This
study demonstrated that visual feedback is both
motivational and helps reduce the "yo-yo" effect
during weight-loss maintenance.
